An operating system is the interface between the user and the hardware. Such as Linux.

Software in the non-physical part of the computer, like applications/apps that make up a computer device.

There are two types of Software:

  • UTILITY SOFTWARE
    • ANTI-VIRUS
    • VPN
    • FIREWALL
  • APPLICATION SOAFTWARE
    • WORD PROCESSOR
    • SPREAD SHEET
    • POWERPOINT
    • PUBLISHER

Operating System:

  • It is a program that manages the operations of the computer for the user.
  • Acts as a bridge between the user and computer’s hardware.
  • It is held in the disc
  • A small program called the loader is held in the ROM.

What does it do:

Manages hardware and software devices.

  1. Memory Management
    • OS allocates memory to the program.
  2. Processor management
    • An execution of identifier like PC
  3. Peripheral management
    • OS controls external devices that are attached to the computer
  4. File management
    • Manages files (.exe)
  5. Controls all of the processes running on computer
  6. It ensures that all hardware and software interact correctly
